In the ever-evolving landscape of workplace design, art is taking on an increasingly crucial role in shaping the environments where we work. A striking example of this trend can be seen in Copenhagen’s Ørestad district at KLP’s HUB Nordic, where art and functionality merge in a unique way. At the heart of this fusion is a stunning 4×30 metre artwork by Danish artist Berit Mogensen Lopez, which goes beyond mere decoration—it integrates art within architectural and acoustic solutions.
The Intersection of Art and Acoustic Functionality
Large open spaces can often be plagued by issues like unwanted echoes and flutter echoes, which can disrupt productivity and diminish the overall experience of the space. To address this, Interior Designer Anders Busk Faaborg brought in Akuart, to create an installation that not only mitigates noise but also serves as a visual focal point.
The challenge was to find a way to balance these acoustic needs with the artistic vision that defines HUB Nordic. Enter Berit Mogensen Lopez, an artist whose work is characterised by the dynamic use of shapes, colours, and textures. Her piece, originally a digital print, was selected from Akuart’s gallery but given the massive scale of the wall—a staggering 4×30 metres—simple enlargement wouldn’t suffice. To ensure the artwork retained its clarity and impact, the piece was carefully repainted and digitised before being transformed into acoustic wall panels.
Berit Mogensen Lopez’s contribution to HUB Nordic highlights the effective collaboration between the artist, interior designers, and acoustic experts. This project shows how integrating art into interior design can not only enhance the aesthetic of a space but also improve its acoustic functionality, resulting in a more balanced and functional workspace.
