The LKR Innovation House in Østbirk is not a new build but the transformation of VELUX’s former timber warehouse from the 1990s. Originally conceived as an experiment in wood construction and once used as a logistics facility, the building has been renewed by retaining more than half of its original structure, including glue laminated beams, internal concrete slabs, and the timber façade.

This approach significantly reduced material use and embodied carbon, demonstrating that renovation can be as radical as new build when driven by values of sustainability and reuse. Surrounded by greenery and filled with daylight, the Innovation House is both a workplace and a manifesto, showing how architecture can connect people, nature, and responsibility.

To support the transformation, Akuart delivered the upgraded Supersonic Wall Panel 100R, along with Writing Boards and Mobile Writing Boards. Unlike the standard model, the 100R edition features frames made from Hydro CIRCAL 100R, 100% recycled aluminium with a CO₂ footprint below 0.5 kg per kilo, among the lowest on the market.

By upgrading to the 100R version, VELUX achieved 1,832 kg CO₂e savings across the aluminium components of the installed solutions. For the Supersonic Wall Panel, this corresponds to a 41.2% reduction in embodied carbon (A1–A3) per m². Compared with using global-average primary aluminium, the savings would have reached 17,766 kg CO₂e. The percentage reduction figure applies specifically to the Supersonic Wall Panel, as LCA values for other product types are not yet available.

“The architecture centres on timber and daylight, and Akuart’s solutions support it with discreet performance, tactility, and flexibility. With fully recycled CIRCAL 100R frames and replaceable canvases, the interiors can change and adapt with VELUX’s needs without losing the sense of calm we set out to create.”

Rooted in material honesty, the renovation preserved the timber and concrete bones of the original warehouse, while Akuart’s raw aluminium frames complement the stripped-back palette of untreated materials. Supersonic panels secure clarity across studios, project rooms, and workshops, while writing boards turn walls into collaborative tools and mobile boards add flexibility for shifting work rhythms. Together, these elements create a calm, cohesive acoustic environment that balances focus with collaboration. With recycled frames and replaceable canvases, the solutions are as future-flexible as the building itself, ensuring spaces can evolve with VELUX’s needs while maintaining the atmosphere of balance and honesty.

“The raw aluminium frames are a natural part of the house’s simple material palette, reflecting our approach to using materials in their most honest form.”

The LKR Innovation House demonstrates how renovation, daylight, timber, and circular acoustic solutions can come together in a low-carbon, future-ready workplace. By reimagining an existing warehouse instead of building anew, VELUX shows that sustainability is not only about what is added but also about what is retained. Akuart’s acoustic systems strengthen this philosophy, merging silence, circularity, and design integrity into a space where people, architecture, and nature are in continuous dialogue.
